An RCD or Residual Current Device is a safety device which disconnects a circuit when it detects an imbalance of the electric current. RCD's are very sensitive and will activate within 10 to 50 milliseconds of current leakage. This ceases the flow of electricity through a person's, body reducing the risk of serious injury or even death. RCD's can also help prevent fire due to appliance and wiring faults.
Australian Standards recommend a Push Button test by the user from daily to 6 monthly depending on the business or home situation. An Operating Time and Push Button test is recommended to be undertaken by a licensed electrician from 12 months to 5 years depending on the type workplace/home. The frequency of interval testing is set by ESO Regulations according to environmental factors, the type of equipment used and the different class of workplace.
Residential RCD's should be Push Button tested every 6 months and tested by a licensed electrician every 2 years.
As with all electrical equipment, regular servicing and maintenance of RCD's is not just regulation, it could save lives. Fallon Solutions Master Electricians have the knowledge and expertise to carry out RCD testing ensuring your home or business stays safe.
